2018 Lower Haight and Hayes Valley House Tour

The Victorian Alliance 45th Annual House Tour takes place on Sunday, October 21, from 1 pm to 5 pm, showcasing a treasure of historic homes, flats, and adaptively-reused historic spaces in the Lower Haight and Hayes Valley neighborhoods. Since the Central Freeway removal began in 2003 on Octavia Boulevard, a new generation of residents began to enliven these two neighborhoods which offer a delightful mix of local character and exquisite craftsmanship that has been lovingly saved, restored, and adapted in new ways.

Iconic San Francisco architecture styles, including the Stick-Eastlake Nightingale House and the Italianate-style Parsonage, will be featured. Over half the buildings have not been on a House Tour before. Tour-goers will enjoy period details like eleven to fourteen-foot ceilings, marble mantels, and handsome staircases as well as respectful adaptations for use in the 21st century. Preserved and restored period interiors, as well as eclectic contemporary décor will inspire this year’s tour goers to appreciate how to live comfortably and stylishly in a historic space. There may be an opportunity to see “work-in-progress” as these historic homes are passing to new owners.

There is much to see while strolling the historic tour route with your illustrated program as a guide, amply illustrated with digitized line drawings from photographs by Victorian Alliance member and photographer Anson Moran. Comfortable shoes and layered clothing are always desirable; stair climbing to reach and view upper floors should be anticipated. Tour guests will enjoy complimentary light refreshments at the historic Haight Street Art Center after 2:00PM. Street parking is limited; public transportation is highly recommended.

Proceeds from this annual fundraiser benefit The Victorian Alliance Grant Program which has awarded more than $400,000 to worthy historic preservation projects since its founding in 1973.
